Planning your visit to Hopetoun House?
We’ve answered some of the most common Visitor FAQs to help you make the most of your day. From opening times to accessibility and Outlander filming locations, everything you need to know is right here.

Hopetoun House, near Edinburgh is open to the public from Easter to the last Sunday in September each year.

Do I need to pre-book my ticket?

Pre-booking isn’t essential, but we strongly recommend it for a faster check-in experience. You can easily book tickets online on our Visit Hopetoun page.

What are your opening days and times?

Hopetoun House and Grounds are open Thursday to Monday, 11am–5pm (last admission 4pm).
We are closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

📌 Please check the website before travelling — we occasionally close for maintenance or private events.

Is entry to Midhope Castle included in my ticket?

Midhope Castle (known to Outlander fans as Lallybroch) is a separate historic site located a few miles from Hopetoun House. Entry is not included in standard admission tickets. However, we offer a joint ticket option and a popular Outlander Guided Tour that includes access to both Hopetoun House and Midhope Castle. Booking in advance is recommended.

How do I get to Hopetoun House?

Use postcode EH30 9RW for Sat Nav.
From South Queensferry, follow brown tourist signs for Hopetoun House.

⚠️ Please avoid the Bo’ness Road A904 — Sat Navs often route incorrectly.

Is there free parking?

Yes, parking at Hopetoun House is completely free for all visitors.

What should I expect on arrival?

You’ll be welcomed by our friendly team at the blue ticket kiosk by the main electric gates. If arriving by car, remain in your vehicle and show your ticket QR code on your phone or printout.

What food and drink options are available?

Our onsite café, The Stables Kitchen, serves coffee, cakes, soups, sandwiches and light lunches — perfect for a break during your visit.

Can I get to Hopetoun by public transport?

Not directly. We’re in a rural location with no nearby bus routes. Taxis and Ubers are possible but return journeys must be pre-booked, as wait times may be long.

Can I cycle to Hopetoun?

Yes. You’re welcome to arrive by bike, but please leave it in the car park. For safety reasons, bikes, scooters and skateboards are not allowed past the car park.

Are dogs allowed?

Dogs are very welcome in the Grounds (on leads) and in the Stables Kitchen , but are not permitted inside the House.
Water bowls are provided outside and we ask that owners clean up after their pets.

Can I take photos or fly a drone?

📷 Personal photography is welcome — no flash indoors please.

🎥 Drone filming is not permitted anywhere on the estate.

📸 Tripods and selfie sticks are not allowed inside.

🚫 Wedding photography is only permitted for couples booked to marry at Hopetoun.
