Tough Mudder / Spartan comes to Hopetoun Estate
On 6th and 7th June 2026, Hopetoun Estate was a host venue for the Scottish leg of the Spartan / Tough Mudder series.
Tough Mudder is an endurance event series combining cross-country running with a series of obstacles. Courses vary from 1km for children to 15km for seasoned competitors, with obstacles often playing on common human fears such as fire, water, electricity and heights. Tough Mudder describes them as “some of the world’s most intense obstacle courses”, designed to test physical strength, mental grit and camaraderie.
Tough Mudder was co-founded in 2010 by British citizens Will Dean and Guy Livingstone, both living in New York City. The first challenge was held in the United States in 2010, on a ski slope in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Since then, millions of people worldwide have participated, and Tough Mudder has become a globally recognised brand.
Terrain varies from course to course, with natural features incorporated into the design, making Hopetoun Estate a perfect venue.
Signature obstacles included Arctic Enema, where participants plunged into an ice-water pool; Electroshock Therapy, involving live wires over a mud field; Funky Monkey, a set of slick, inclined and declining monkey bars over cold water; and Everest, a mud- and grease-covered quarter pipe.
The event village was located in the South Deer Park, where around 7,000 competitors began and ended the race. Most obstacles were also positioned in the Deer Park, with the cross-country course and other obstacles extending across the north-western section of the Estate.
The event remains hugely popular, with teams and participants spanning a wide age range. We also formed a “Team Hopetoun” of staff members and contractors, who all agreed it was a very enjoyable day. All finishers received a medal, headband and T-shirt.
